This is a bit different than what I usually write about, but bear with me. I believe Rachel Zegler was thrown under the bus for the whole woke Snow White thing. Okay follow along, today I was thinking about the definition of a corporation and their purpose. In my prestigious accounting classes we learn that the purpose/goal of a corporation is to increase value for the stockholders. In practice this means that management of a corporation should try to get the price of each issued stock as high as possible. Why not just make the most profit? Well because this term can be too vague and the idea is that is the stock is up in price than there is more than enough to pay creditors, employees and anyone else with a claim to the assets.

Okay crash course of a corporation aside, what do you think of when you hear the word “Disney”? I’m serious, what do you think of? Does a grand animation house with decades worth of beautiful films. Maybe you think of Disney theme parks. All of these are true but none describe what disney is fundamentally as a business-they are a corporation. Their goal is to make maximise their stock- any means necessary.

Pre Snow White production there was a growing fanbase of Disney that was tired and done with the lazy remakes. Contrary with how the media framed these fans, most of these people were not some alt-right racist whatevers. There were just an increasing amount of people who acknowledged Disney’s increasingly lazy attempts to nostalgia bate for profit, profits to maximize the stocks. With each new remake announced there was less talent dedicated to new projects.

Enter- Snow White, the stars for this one could not have aligned more perfectly. When the first images of Rachel in her cheap looking dress and seven diverse dwarfs behind her the internet did what the internet does best, offer opinions. Then the clips of her in interviews surfaced and the rest is history. Somewhere in the middle of this mess some Disney higher-ups went and visited Rachel in an attempt to do a PR cleanup.

Now ask yourself, why would the higher ups at Disney be really freaking out? Perhaps they just felt bad about how their creative endeavor was being perceived or they felt bad about how far they took their lazy remakes. Of course not! They saw the writing on the wall, they were going to loose money on this one, and a lot of it.

Now sure shareholders would feel the sting a little, the stock would decrease for a while perhaps they wouldn’t be raking in the sweet dividends for a few quarters. This whole debacle really reflected poorly on the manager especially those who were involved in the mess. Those were the people with the incentive to let the young leading lady take the fall for this failed project.

This is even backed up by a high profile manager flying out to see Rachel after the backlash started to try to “clean-up” the image of the movie. It’s pretty clear tha Rachel really believed in the movie what they were making. You can look up the clips yourself of what she had to say about the new direction. Realistically a remake on a fairytale classic was never going to have a huge impact on the world, but you can really feel for her passion in the cause she thought the movie was going for. So at best she’s passionate and at worst she was just a bit naive; a normal trait in most young adults I may add. If the worst she can be called in naive, I don’t see why her talents can’t be utilized in future projects.

Thank you for sticking around,

Best, Ms. Bells
